As with most bands in the music industry, one would kinda know what to expect from their live performance soon as they’d bought their concert ticket. Norwegian band Ulver, however, is not like most other bands. With an ever changing sound in their track record, ranging from black metal to folk and electronic, they made their audience’s waiting all worthwhile in their recent concert at Athens.

An honest approach, with no support band to prepare the turf, Ulver’s appearance was a solid proof of the bands multi-genre music. It was an eclectic mix of black metal with very strong influences of noise and experimental that flooded Fuzz on Saturday evening. Accompanied with video projections and light show to match it resembled more to a dark movie soundtrack where one can lay back, close their eyes and imagine they are holding the starring role, rather than being in a concert. Walking down a cold, icy field covered in snow in the middle of an under-light winter afternoon in the arctic circles was one of the first things that come to mind, as I watched the 6-member band unfold their magic on stage. At times more “deathy”, at time more “stoner”, at times more “fairy tale” like, at times “dreamy” and long, Ulver did not fail to capture their audience in their hour and half long journey at the Greek capital. Despite their heavy dependence on electronic media that left their stage presence rather still they, no doubt, left very good impressions with no less than three encores and demands for more.

With an extremely pleasant unpredictability to their genre mixing character, they were certainly something less mainstream and worth looking forward to.
